INTRODUCTION
The ISO-9001-2008 certified Electric Loco Shed,
East Central Railway, Gomoh situated in Gomoh.
ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES
An Electric Locomotive is a locomotive powered by
electricity from overhead lines or on -board energy
storage such as battery or fuel cell.
Locomotives were classified by track gauge, motive
power, function and power (or model number) in a
four- or five-letter code. The first letter denotes the
track gauge. The second letter denotes motive power
(diesel or electric), and the third letter denotes use
(goods, passenger, mixed or shunting). The fourth
letter denotes a locomotive's chronological model
number
Netaji SC Bose Gomoh has an electric loco shed
with capacity to hold 125+ locos. Locos housed
at the shed include WAP-7-29,WAG-7, WAG-9-
198.
The main objective of this loco shed is to
inspect and maintain the locos that operate
throughout the year.
SYNTAXS USED IN LOCOMOTIVES:
First letter (gauge):
o W – Broad gauge (wide) – 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm)
o Y – Metre gauge (yard) – 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3¼8 in)
o Z – 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge
o N – 2 ft (610 mm) narrow (toy) gauge
Second letter (motive power):
o D – Diesel
o C – DC electric (DC overhead line)
o A – AC electric (AC overhead line)
o CA – DC and AC (AC or DC overhead line); CA is
considered one letter
o B – Battery (rare)
Third letter (job type):
o G – Goods
o P – Passenger
o M – Mixed (goods and passenger)
o S – Shunting (switching)
o U – Multiple unit (electric or diesel)
o R – Railcar
In WDM 3A, W denotes broad gauge; D denotes diesel
power; M denotes mixed use (goods and passenger service),
and 3A denotes 3,100 hp (2,300 kW) (3,000 + 100). In WAP
5, W is broad gauge; A is AC electric; P is passenger
service, and 5 indicates that the locomotive is the fifth
model used.
COMPONENTS OF LOCOMOTIVE:
1.Transformer (including Tap-Changer)
2.Rectifier
3.Smoothing Reactor
4.Traction Motors
5.Main Starting Resistances (in DC Traction on
Dual Power Locos only)
6. Dynamic Braking Resistance Cooling Blower
7.Auxilliaries
THE VARIOUS SECTIONS THAT WERE EXPLORED
DURING THE TRAINING AT LOCO SHED ARE AS
FOLLOWS:
E-3 SECTION
E-4 SECTION
E-5 SECTION
Let’s explore the sections one by one
E-3 SECTION
This section is responsible for the inspection and the
overhauling of the traction motors that drives the
TRACTION MOTORS-
It is one of the most important equipment of electric
A 6 pole DC series wound motor with commutating
They are used for the propulsion of the vehicles.
Locomotives have 6 axis. Each axis carry a single
traction motor which is connected to wheel by direct
spur gear meshing , these motor drive locomotives by
taking current from the overhead lines through
Ventilation system for these motors are forced and air
is supplied from separate motor blower to cool these
traction motors.
E-4 SECTION
This section is in charge of relays, speedometers,
microprocessors, battery chargers etc.
SPEEDOMETER:-
Speedometer combines the technology of the field
proven indicators. It gives statistics of the speed of the
locomotive along with the ability to store journey data
in a flash memory in a single housing . Due to small
size it can easily be installed and retrofitted in public
transports such as locomotives, tramways, metro
trains etc. This unit is very much suitable to work
under severe environment conditions typically
encountered in real road vehicles where accurate high
speed indication is a very crucial factor.
Inside SPM, data is recorded in a compact FLASH
MEMORY CARD. This compact memory card can store
long term data of the last 60 days of halt and run.
RELAYS:-
The purpose of relay in electrical circuit and fluid
circuit is to check proper flow of current and
circulation of the fluid and also to safeguard the
appliance from getting damaged in an event of no flow
or improper flow of current or no or improper
circulation of fluid in the circuit. In the absence of
relay there would have been no protection of the
appliance in the concerned circuit.
RELAYS PROVIDED IN ELECTRICAL
LOCOMOTIVES:
1.Safety Relay – Used for the safety of the entire
system. Examples are QRSI, QLM, QE, QF, etc.
2. Protection/Sequence Relay – Used for the
protection of a particular device of the system.
Examples are Q-45, Q-46, Q-51, Q-53, Q-54, Q-100,
QSIT, QFL, Q-50, QCON, etc.
3. Time Lag Relay – Used to delay the tripping of
the locomotive under certain circumstances. For
example QTD 105, QTD 106.
4. Signalling Relay – Used to indicate the proper
functioning of particular devices in the locomotive.
For example QV60, QV61 , QV62, QV63, etc.
MICROPROCESSORS:-
The main objective is to primarily locate the
faults for the loco’s correct maintainance.
It acts as the heart of the system.
Another major objective is to replace some
existing relays and it’s corresponding
interlocking logic with the software to reduce the
cost and complexity of the wiring and to add
certain diagnostic feature for better
maintainance of the loco.
E-5 SECTION
This section inspects and maintains the Transformer,
Graduator(GR) and SMGR.
The TRANSFORMER used in loco is an autotransformer
which is an electrical transformer with only one winding
“AUTO” prefix refers to the coil acting on itself and not on
any kind of automatic mechanism. In autotransformer,
portions of same windings act as both the primary and
secondary sides of transformer.
AUTOTRANSFORMER is used because the part of winding
does double duty along with it being smaller, lighter and
cheaper. It also includes lower leakage reactance, lower
BRAKE RIGGING
The means of distributing the
a brake cylinder to the various wheels on the vehicle. It consists
of rods and levers suspended from the underframe and bogies
and linked with pins and
PANTOGRAPHS
A pantograph (or "pan", or "panto") is an apparatus mounted on
the roof of an electric train, tram or electric bus to collect power
through contact with an overhead line.
TRACTION COVERTER
Traction Converter could be a combination of one or more
inverters each controlling one or more
Electric locomotive propulsion system architectures typically provide
secondary winding of
the Traction Converter.
BRAKE RIGGING
The means of distributing the braking forces from
cylinder to the various wheels on the vehicle. It consists
of rods and levers suspended from the underframe and bogies
and linked with pins and bushes.
PANTOGRAPHS
(or "pan", or "panto") is an apparatus mounted on
roof of an electric train, tram or electric bus to collect power
through contact with an overhead line.
TRACTION COVERTER
could be a combination of one or more
inverters each controlling one or more traction motors. EMU and
motive propulsion system architectures typically provide
secondary winding of trac
loss, lower excitation current and increased KVA rating for
given size and mass.
OTHER AUXILLIARIES OF E-5 SECTION ARE:
• Motor for silicon rectifier
cooling
• Motor used for cooling
traction cooling
• Motor used for the dynamic
braking of the loco
The training at LOCO SHED GOMOH was very
helpful.
Diploma students gain theoretical knowledge
through books. It is volatile and not of much use
without knowing its practical implementation.
Training is one of the important aspects for an
diploma student’s carrier to strengthen the
practical concepts. It was an awesome
experience in training as the things we all learnt
in our previous semester was seen
implemented practically
I had a chance to see the different components
of loco as well as different sections of loco
shed, which was very interesting. So the
training was more than hope to me and helped
me to understand about loco and more.
